Danse Macabre!

Danse macabre is late-medieval tradition that combines visual art, architecture, poetry, and other media. It is one of the most widespread iconographic themes in the history of western art, extremely connected to the spread of the Black Plague, an epidemic which at the end of the Middle Ages wiped out millions of victims throughout Europe, but which also brought out a more complex thought about reality, which saw man tried to investigate deeply his relationship with the earthly world.

The dance of death derives from the more general concept that every movement supra-mundane and of the afterlife is dance: stars, gods, spirits, nature.

This project is an austere invitation to dance towards the unknown, researching through a visionary integration of dancing bodies, film, electronic music and light.

It looks for reveal danse macabre to be dance by virtue of its premodern virtuality, binding and affirming a relationships with the world, deciphering dance between meaning and movements into a new horizon to relieve itself from the stress of epidemics.

The project imagines a performance for 4 dancers, creating a space between past and present, involving in a real energetic dialogue with the human being it approaches, looking for a symbolic transformation of the dance experience.

Starting from my previous project titled Some Choreographies, – a dialogue between a dancer and a video collection of different styles of dance edited and reworked – in Danse Macabre! a visual score aims to stimulate both the physical memory of the performers and the free associations of the viewer. By the inclusion of film as a third partner, recording some part of the choreography from different angles, in longshot or in close-up and projected in sync with the live dancers looking for a “fourth dimension.”

Reality dances with nonreality, real-time exists simultaneously with illusionistic time. The figures mirror themselves, becoming a doppelgänger. A perceptive reversibility between the phenomenal body and the visual body, between hearing and seeing, a mirror that extends the reflective relationship that the body has with itself.

These videos will define the space with the aim of showing the vitality of the image in a historical moment where its overpopulation seems to decree its end. The dance tries to free itself from the “violence of representation”, oscillating between different poles for juxtapositions, making the invisible visible in a hyperconscious tension, triggering a reflection between life and death, where only the art of counterpoint can produce a melody .

Seeing generates another way of feeling, the video image confronts us with an illusory promise, creating a cognitive dissonance in the viewer. Dance has always known death, it offers an experience that gives itself to be seen, but not to be possessed.
